This is part of my series: American Zombie: How To Stop Being A Mindless Consumer.

During the course of my life, I’ve had positive events and negative ones. I got married, graduated from college, and I’m moving toward financial independence. I’ve also failed college courses, been really sick, and needed surgery. More than once. And yet, my overall satisfaction with life has remained relatively consistent.

This concept is called the Hedonic treadmill. And it’s something I consider before making major purchases. I remind myself that rarely will more stuff make me materially happier.
